David Hillstrom’s poetry collection, The Story of Our People, uses parables to explore how mankind might achieve harmony after the world is torn apart by war

ATHENS, Greece -- December 2, 2008 -- In his poetry collection, The Story of Our People, author David Hillstrom uses a poet, a woman and a welder to explore how war’s destruction becomes a hopeful opportunity to recreate a new, more aware and enlightened society.

The Story of Our People is a collection of poems that form a story. Amidst the rubble of a city nearly destroyed by war, an aged grandmother guards a group of orphaned children. To entertain and edify them, she tells them stories about a poet, a woman and a welder and how they manage to create a new society through their own selflessness. Through these poetic tales, the children learn about loving relationships, confirmation of brotherhood and the kind of sacrifices that can lead to hope. Hillstrom’s poems suggest that a harmonious new society can be built from the ruins of the past and that children will be the ones to instigate such changes.

Hillstrom means his poems to be as lyrical as they are starkly realistic. He intersperses stage directions among the verse and alludes to biblical and modern conflict to create a kind of poetry that he believes to be timeless and new. Kirkus Discoveries says The Story of Our People has “adroit language textured with edifying insights, verse that is engaging and alive.”
