The Final Paradigm by Nikolai Eberhardt aims to build bridges between the natural sciences, religion and the humanities

BETHLEHEM, Pa. -- December 9, 2008 -- The Final Paradigm: Tragedy, Religion, Knowledge and Folly in Our Neuro-Mechanical Life by Nikolai Eberhardt, now in paperback and hardcover, attempts to understand how human beings live, function and produce cultures that he feels are all too often filled with war, misery and turmoil.

Consciousness, says professor Eberhardt, is not a freely acting agent in the human brain, but is a side effect of neuro-mechanics. Man, he argues, having been a product of blind Darwinian evolution, today is best understood as a bio-mechanical, self-reproducing and learning robot — or “biobot.”

In his book, Eberhardt argues that modern man is in a dire predicament, because he is torn between prime instincts in the old, genetically determined brain, and a new neocortical one that builds a supra-biological, run-away and materialistic culture. In The Final Paradigm, Eberhardt strives to expound on that model of a divided brain to resolve such issues as evolution vs. religion, ideology vs. objective truth and free will vs. determinism. Eberhardt’s book also examines how and why religion and mysticism exist, and how they can be derived from the brain’s attempt to bring its two parts back into a working harmony.

Once man understands the divided neuro-mechanical structure that is at the core of his biobot existence, Eberhardt suggests, the political project of the 18th century Enlightenment philosophy needs to be re-evaluated. He believes it is at that point that tattering democracies can be injected with new realism and stability.
